Schattenwelt
Long Shadows
Also known as the Red Army Faction, the Baader-Meinhof
group had its roots in extreme left-wing 1960s student politics and terrorized
Germany for two decades, targeting the German elite. Long Shadows
looks at the aftermath, more than two decades after the “German
Autumn”, when the second generation of the RAF went through a period
of extreme violence.
After 21 years, Widmer, a former member of the Red Army Faction, is released
from prison. He moves into an apartment block, hoping for anonymity and
a possibility to establish contact with his estranged son. Soon after
arriving he meets Valerie, his next-door neighbour. The young woman is
trying to get her life back on track after losing custody of her child.
Soon she starts showing an interest in Widmer, as the two have a shared
history, though Widmer is initially unaware of this fact. As they learn
more about each other the truth comes between them – her father
was murdered during an RAF assault.
Connie Walther’s intimate film looks at the RAF, a topic still very
much being debated in Germany today. This film concentrates on the perspective
of the victims from both sides: the families of those murdered and the
families of the terrorists. Uli Herrmann’s screenplay was co-written
with Peter-Juergen Boock, a former RAF member whose story closely resembles
Widmer’s.
Connie Walther landed her first success with her graduation
film Das erste Mal (1996), which was named Best Graduation
Film from a German film academy in that year. Since then, she has demonstrated
her talents in a variety of genres and formats with films such as: Boersday
Blues (short, 1992), Der Clown II (TV, 1997),
Tic Tac Toe (TV documentary, 1998), Hauptsache
Leben (1998), Offene Rechnung (TV, 1999), Never
Mind the Wall (Wie Feuer und Flamme, 2001),
Im falschen Leben (TV, 2001), Und Tschuess, Ihr Lieben
(TV, 2002), Ei in Japan (documentary, 2005), Mord
in aller Unschuld (TV, 2006), 12 Means: I Love You
(TV, 2007), and Long Shadows (Schattenwelt,
2008). |
